Electric Guitar Tuners
For a beginner who hasn't developed an ear for different pitches, tuning a guitar can be quite difficult. An electronic tuner is not only useful for a beginner but for all players. But, if a tuner isn't available then you will have to rely on the old method of tuning by ear.
Tuners:
There are a variety of electronic tuners on the market today ranging from chromatic tuners...robotic tuners...strobe light tuners.
Chromatic Tuner:
Chromatic adjustable tuners are probably the most popular tuners used for perfect pitch tuning. A chromatic tuner can hear or play any note including sharps and flats. You just need to know what note corresponds to each string then no matter which key the instrument uses, the tuner will help you find the note for the string. The calibration function allows you to adjust the pitch in 1 Hz steps over a range of 410 - 480 Hz in order to accommodate a variety of pitches, giving you the flexibility to tune precisely to any song or key. Many electronic chromatic tuners has both a built in microphone and a jack to plug directly into the tuner with an electric guitar or an acoustic guitar with a pick-up. Some have an internal speaker that plays a reference tone letting you tune by ear.
Chromatic tuners aren't specific to any certain type of instrument. You can use them to tune guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins and other stringed instruments. There is also the floor-type chromatic tuner for guitar and bass players which is made to be set on the floor and you can plug your normal 1/4" cable in and then out of it to tune anytime you need to.
Designed to tune acoustic guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins and other acoustic string instruments is the electronic tuner that clips on the headstock of the guitar and is tuned by the string vibration or sound.
There are other electronic tuners that mounts directly on a guitar like a magnet made with a material that works by attraction not adhesion, so it won't mar the guitar's finish.
Robotic Guitar Tuner:
This tuner acts the same way a standard chromatic tuner does, but comes with a tuning peg attachment that tightens your strings for you. All you have to do is plug your guitar into the tuner, put the tuner over a tuning peg on your guitar. Then pluck the string and the tuner will do the rest. The tuner’s motor turns the tuning peg up to pitch and then will beep when it is in tune. Works with any pickup-equipped 6-string.
Stroboscopic Guitar Tuner:
This tuner shines a stroboscopic (flashing) light source by illuminating a portion of a vibrating string for tuning musical instruments. By shining a flashing light at a vibrating string you can see whether the string is in tune with the light source. It emits 6 light frequencies matching standard guitar tuning. As this is set for only standard tuning, if you play other tunings this is not going to help you. Your best choice is an electronic tuner.
