Tuning a Guitar
Standard tuning
is the most
popular
tuning on a 6 or 12 string guitar. Standard pitch is 440Hz. There are
various methods you can use to tune a guitar ( i.e.) Electronic Tuner,
Tuning Fork, Piano Notes...the easiest and most accurate being the electronic
tuner, but sometimes
you might not have these available to
tune by. Thats why you should learn to tune your guitar by ear. It also
sharpens your ear for different string pitches, tones and chord
changing.
Tuning a guitar by ear is not that hard once you know
where to begin.
The following 6 strings on a guitar are (from top to bottom)
6th = low E
5th = A
4th = D
3rd= G
2nd= B
1st = high E
The first E is the top string (largest) and the last E is the bottom
string (smallest). The top string (largest) will be the starting
point. Once you get the E string tuned and don't touch it, you
fine tune the other 5 strings to it. As mentioned above the
standard tuning is 440Hz, but if you don't have a note to tune the E by
you can tune the string up to any pitch...just not to high to break the
string.
* Tune the Top E string (largest). Standard tuning is 440.
Step 2:
* Tune the 5th A string. Go to the 5th fret on the low E string and note it. Pick the low E string (noted) and un-noted A string together. You will probably hear a different pitch on each note. Tune the A string until it sounds the same pitch as the noted E string. It may take a few tries to fine tune them.
Step 3:
* Tune the 4th D string. Go to the 5th fret on the A string and note it. Pick the A string (noted) and un-noted D string together. Tune the D string until it sounds the same pitch as the noted A string.
Step 4:
* Tune the 3rd G string. Go to the 5th fret on the D string and note it. Pick the D string (noted) and un-noted G string together. Tune the G string until it sounds the same pitch as the noted D string.
Step 5:
* Tune the 2nd B string. Go to the 4th fret on the G string and note it. Pick the G string (noted) and un-noted B string together. Tune the B string until it sounds the same pitch as the noted G string.
Step 5:
* Tune the 1st high E string. Go to the 5th fret on the B string and note it. Pick the B string (noted) and un-noted E string together. Tune the E string until it sounds the same pitch as the noted B string.
* High E--------------------------------------------------------0-----------------
* B--------------------------------------------------0-----------5----------------
* G----------------------------------------0--------4-------------------
* D------------------------------0--------5-----------------------
* A--------------------0--------5-------------------------
* Low E-------------5-------------------
* 0 = Open String
* 4 = 4th Fret Noted String
* 5 = 5th Fret Noted String
Your ability and skill to tune by ear will develop more over time, so don't get discouraged if it seems hard at first.
